Saskatchewan’s Angela Bongomin and Libby Epoch won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women in Valdivia, Chile.

Canada matched up against a strong United States team in the championship game. Both teams entered the final with unblemished 4-0 records and it was tight through the first quarter, but the USA came away with a 109-62 victory to win the tournament for the eighth consecutive time.

The second-place finish equals Canada’s best result in its history at the tournament, which was originated in 1988 and held every four years until 2004 when it changed to its current biennial format. Canada also earned silver medals in 2006, 2008, and 2014.

Canada rolled through Group B play with a perfect 3-0 record, starting with an 87-56 win over Mexico on Wednesday. The team followed that up with an 88-39 win over host Chile on Thursday, then defeated Puerto Rico by a 69-47 score on Friday to earn a spot in Saturday’s semifinals. In the semis, Canada outscored Brazil 22-5 in the fourth quarter to turn what had been an 11-point deficit into a 58-52 victory.

Canada’s top-four finish at the tournament ensures automatic qualification for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women, which will be hosted by Italy next July.
